On Saturday the 11th of February at the Beachland Tavern in Collinwood, The Suede BrothersRed GiantVenomin JamesLotus Pedal and The Del Rio Bandits rocked the stage in support of college radio! Those who braved the cold and snow to make it to the show certainly got more than their money’s worth – with all proceeds from the show going to support 88.7 WJCU – a non-profit, non-commercial radio station that has served the Heights community for over 40 years.

Temple of Perdition interview

The conquest of the unholy mountain: An interview with VENOMIN JAMES

James Venamun is a character from the novel The Exorcist whose spirit invades people’s bodies and makes them kill other people. This in case you’re wondering where the name of this band comes from. But fear not, VENOMIN JAMES are few bearded men (well, maybe not all of them) who probably would never try to invade someone else’s body or force someone’s hand to commit murder. Although they come from a place notorious for some events in the past that would make the flesh of an average housewife creep and be a source of inspiration for not one and two horror movie makers.
VENOMIN JAMES is a Doom metal band from Cleveland, Ohio. The band was formed somewhere in 2005 and in 2007 self-released the debut “Left Hand Man”, a little bit raw but incredibly catchy and sincere album. The second one, “Crowe Valley Blues”, which went out through the Ohio based label Auburn Records in 2010, is again full of powerful riffs and groovy bass but more complex and showing a bigger part of the potential these guys actually have. What I know for sure is that VENOMIN JAMES have that ‘thing’ that gives individuality of the music they play, brings new life to their influences and makes their sound so distinguishable. For some reason both albums didn’t get the attention I believe they deserve, it could be me being biased because I like them so much or the radars of most of the people were broken at the time the records came out. I really hope more chance will be given to their next album. Joe Fortunato (guitars) and Jim Meador (vocals) were so kind to answer to a few questions, so here we go:

Year of the Dragon

2012. Don’t buy into the hype that the world will end. The Mayan calendar doesn’t predict the end of days.

Now that we’re clear of that, let’s talk about Venomin James. Lots of shows coming up. A proposed tour of the midwest U.S.A. is now skunked, so we’ll regroup on that and get back to you. Maybe we’ll look east instead. Proposed tour might be back on…waiting on some confirmations.

After a short break for the holidays, we’re getting back into recording the finishing pieces of “Unholy Mountain”. The track count is back up to 8, with the addition of a new composition from Tomasz. Hopefully mixing goes quickly, and we can start posting new rough mixes.

New riffs and song ideas have been threatened at rehearsal lately, so maybe some new material will surface in the live sets this spring. Lots of ideas floating around. Lots of promise in the air.

Until next time, Doom On!

Winter of our (dis)content.

The new album is progressing nicely.

We’ve had about a dozen sessions over these autumn months at Supernatural Sound. At this point, all that we have left are a few vocal overdubs and some odds & ends on bass & guitar. While we waited on Erin’s bass rig to come back from the shop, we’ve focused on layering in sound FX and spotting a few mellotron & Moog pieces. The production value of this album is much different and greater than CVB’s – owed to a bit more experience and a few new pieces of gear. Using Sabbath’s “Master of Reality” & “Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath” as production blueprints, we are going down a path of added layers of production tricks, only where it serves the tunes.

We’ve been posting rough mixes of the sessions to SoundCloud, so pop in over there every so often, and see what’s up.

Which brings me to the release of this beast. We’re eyeballing a Vinyl + Downloads release, and maybe a severely limited run of CDs. Limited because nobody is buying the albums in that format. If the label goes for this plan, we’re looking to have the album out by early spring 2012. Limiting the run means the album hits faster than usual.

What took so long to get to this point?

Preparing for Wacken ate up several months. We needed to get plenty of rehearsal in with Eric – Who, by the way, has fit very nicely into our kvlt. The whole trip and experience taught us a few lessons about being road-ready. Did we do alright over there? Some say “Yes”, some say “Not really.” If you were there, you made up your own mind. Me, I just watch the video of the show and see missed opportunities in some ways. I had fun, but we’ve played much better than that. Hopefully some people in the crowd saw what we’re about, and will give us another shot on this record.

We also needed time to adjust working with Jared’s tracks. It’s harder than we thought to listen to him playing, and not seeing him there in the control room. We’re still sticking to the parameter we’ve set for ourselves – we’re using only Jared’s drums on the recording, limitations and all. So far, so good. The tracks sound great. A secondary limitation is that we only have 7 completed songs. The remaining fragments will make their way into something.

We’re doing the album with no budget, and in our spare time. I’m not complaining here. This means we can take our time to make things the way we want them to be, because we aren’t paying for studio time. We’ve already discarded plenty of recordings and ideas. This means that the record will come out as intended, and not a moment before. On the other hand, we all have our normal lives that interfere with the recording process, and makes things take longer than necessary. If we were somehow magically able to devote a majority of our time to making the record, it would already be finished. Such is the life of an unknown band on a small label.

Plans are in the works for some touring next year, and some more videos. Once the album is released, we hope to really give it a bigger push than CVB had.

Until next time,

Fortunato

State of the (dis)Union, Sept. 2011

We’re rolling into October very soon. This is the time of the year when VJ becomes more prolific it seems. We’re pretty far into the tracking & overdubbing process for “Unholy Mountain”. We spent some time last week making mixes of where all the songs stand at this point in time. Overall, the tunes are coming together into a cohesive album.

We made the difficult decision to leave one of the tracks off of the album that had been a candidate for the last year. The song is an instrumental jam, recorded sometime in 2008. While going through other sessions, we came across this musical segment and immediately knew that it needed to see some kind of release. As we’ve been going through and working on all the tracks, shaping them for the record, this jam track has become the elephant in the room. The more we placed it in sequence with the rest of the album, the more we realized it just doesn’t fit. It will be released someday soon, most likely as a download or some type of bonus track.

So, that decision brought us down to 7 tracks for the album. We then decided to write an acoustic reprise to one of the other songs to become the traditional eighth. It’s a good trade, because both versions will showcase the best pieces of the original song, and will tie nicely into the instrumental passages we’re putting between a few of the tracks.

Work continues this week until we begin sessions for the new Destructor album, “Decibel Casualties”.

Tentative tracklist for “Unholy Mountain” (not final order):
